Are there different sedation techniques?
There are three types used most often-nitrous oxide (also knows as "laughing gas"), oral sedation (pill), and IV sedation. Nitrous oxide is the oldest method, and gives the patient a feeling of relaxation. It is ideal for a short dental treatment. Patients are usually allowed to drive themselves home afterwards.
The next level of sedation is oral sedation, where in the patient is given a pill an hour before their procedure to deeply relax them. This type of sedation usually lasts 7-8 hours. Only dentists with specialized training and Board certification, like Dr. Khodadadi, can use this type of sedation.
The next level of sedation is IV sedation ( Parenteral ) that might be the combination of the above mentioned sedation techniques. This technique requires more advanced training and experience. Dr. Khodadadi completed his sedation training at the University of Southern California –USC school of Dentistry – and has California dental board certification. During this type of sedation patient will be in a state of extreme relaxation.
